Are you a good writer? Do you know how to command the attention of a room full of people? Have people told you that you are a great communicator? Are you creative? If so, maybe you should consider a career in sales and marketing. Since the majority of what a sales and marketing rep does involves communication — both written and verbal — strong writing and speaking skills are essential for a salesperson.

At its core, selling is basically a social business and those who are the most successful are able to create and communicate their ideas to a wide audience. Many advertising clients expect high-level presentations from sales representatives, so a successful marketing representative has to be familiar with and comfortable using the latest technology. In many situations. sales and marketing personnel have to also be able to design their own presentations.

A career in sales and marketing is also a great choice for competitive individuals with a lot of personal drive. Many of these positions include a compensation plan that is fairly dependent upon sales and commission. It is a career path that encourages quick thinking, disciplined work habits and creative flexibility. In addition to these creative and driven skills, the best marketing and advertising salespeople are also strategic and go into every meeting with an agenda. In fact, 60% of sales representatives go into a sales situation with a carefully outlined strategy. This type of employee is 33% more likely to close sales, make sales goals, and earn commission incentives.

A sales and marketing person also needs to be willing to prepare several ideas or angles in many situations. They have to be able to quickly read a client’s reactions and predict client needs. If the first pitch does not work, the successful sales representative needs to be willing to offer other options or take the time to recreate a plan.

A warm smile and handshake may go a long way at a sales call, but a great career in sales and marketing demands strong oral and written communication skills. If you are not able to present polished written and spoken presentations, it is difficult to be successful in this career that highlights communication. Sales career opportunities are available in every field and interest area and the most successful representatives select the types of sales jobs that feature products or strategies that they know well. In an unknown field, successful sales and marketing reps are willing to do the research needed to become an expert.
