Bigger Servers Aren’t Better Servers — and Here’s Why

You’ve just logged into the newest online game — maybe it’s an MMORPG, such as World of Warcraft or League of Legends — or maybe it’s simply a version of online chess. Either way, you’re expecting to be able to connect with other people to play with them via the internet. However, you can’t seem to connect. You’ve logged into the game all right, but messages keep popping up saying that the servers are down, or they’re just full. You decide to wait a few minutes, and then retry. Not able to get into a room to play with people. You give it a few more minutes, a half hour, maybe even an hour — still nothing.

Completely frustrated, you wonder, why does this happen? Why can’t the corporations and game developers just make bigger servers?

The answer?

Bigger isn’t always better.
